![]() I think they even say 'can you protect me from yourself'. this was shown becuase boromir, someone inside their own camp was turned evil and tried to take the ring (even for that short time). that was the point in the fellowship that Frodo, along with Aragorn realized that the power of the ring was too strong for either of them to control, so going alone or going with 10 people, or going with 500 people wouldn't matter. Denethor had similar sentiments for Gandalf when it came to the quest. They wouldn't be alone in this belief either. He had ample reason for his decision, though some readers/viewers may not think it was the right one. He felt beholden to this, in addition to his (correct) assumption that Frodo left so as "not to lead any friend to death with him in Mordor." He respected Frodo's decision, must have understood the implications of Merry and Pippen's eventual interrogation, and had made a promise to defend Minas Tirith. Of course all this is in addition to the fact that Aragorn promised Boromir he would go to Minas Tirith, before he knew Frodo and Sam had left. There would have been no chance of success. They would have been unable to withstand Sauron and Saruman's interrogation and spilled the beans on Frodo's quest. As far as Aragorn could tell, this was a certain outcome if he did not pursue them. Knowing that Frodo has made the decision to go alone as ring bearer, and not wanting to leave his friends and allies to be tortured by orcs and interrogated about the ring, he does the only thing he can, which is to pursue the prisoners.Īragorn would have followed Frodo to the end, and he could have tried to catch up with Frodo, but this would basically go against the wishes of the ring bearer, abandon his friends, and lead to revealing the Council of Elrond's plans to destroy the ring and sneak into Mordor.Ĭonsider the implications of allowing Merry and Pippin to be taken to Saruman. Frodo leaves, and Sam (guessing his master’s mind), follows him and they take off alone.Īragorn is left with the choice. When the party realizes Frodo is missing and Boromir scared him off, They panic and chaos breaks out. Things go bad, and Frodo realizes that he cannot trust the fellowship, nor can he take his friends into Mordor, and goes alone. Boromir, who already felt that bringing the ring to Mordor was a terrible idea, also lost his promise of Aragorn coming with him to claim Kingship and rally the troops. While Frodo contemplated, Aragorn decides that Boromir is to take Meri and Pippin to Minas Tirith, and the rest would go to Mordor with Frodo. He also could not deal with the guilt of taking others into Mordor with him. Frodo did not want to go to Minas Tirith, because he felt there was no point other than to feel safe for a bit. This, of course, put Boromir in even worse of a position.įrodo was given the option to go straight to Mordor, or go out of his way to Minas Tirith for a while. He then felt he must help Frodo, and could not follow his original path to Minas Tirith. No one knew Gandalf’s plan, and Aragorn was forced into the role of Fellowship leader. Plans got screwed though due to Gandalf falling in Moria. Aragorn had not planned on going to Mordor with Frodo, but they were going to walk the same path for many many miles, and so it made sense for them to all travel together. Boromir, for example, was headed to Minas Tirith, and Aragorn had told Boromir that he would bring his sword (which had been reforged in Rivendell very early in the books) to Minas Tirith as well, to help bring hope back to the troops. During the council of Elrond, the 9 fellowship members were chosen to represent the free people, but also out of convenience. The other 3 hobbits forced him to take them with him, basically saying that they would follow him even if he said no. Through the entire book, Frodo felt immense guilt about having anyone come with him on his quest.
